WE GIVE YOU A PEEK AT THE FAB LIFE OF HAND-LETTERING ARTIST AND BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF THE ABCS OF HAND LETTERING, ABBEY SY!
Hello, Abbey! How do you plan your week ahead?
I always set aside an hour (or less) on a Sunday, jotting down my personal and work schedule. This helps me get a clear picture of what needs to be done in the coming days— also so I don’t panic on a Monday morning.
How do you prioritize your to-do list with daily/weekly commitments or tasks?
This always depends on what project/s I am working on. For example, I’m doing a book now, so that takes up a huge percentage of my schedule. Then I plot the remaining projects and tasks around it.
What’s the best way to start the week?
A good morning workout and being in a refreshed state (meaning, no work on Sundays if possible!).
Tell us about your morning routine. What gets you pumped up in the morning?
Usually, I work out early in the morning so I don’t have an excuse to skip it. If I can’t squeeze that into my schedule, I always meditate before getting out of bed and having breakfast. I use an app and just close my eyes and reflect—it helps me calm down especially when I have a lot of work to finish.
How do you take breaks on a typical weekday?
I have a bad habit of not taking a lot of breaks, but if I do, I usually watch an episode from a series, read a book, walk around my neighborhood, or do errands to pass the time.
What’s your go-to nightcap?
Reading a magazine or a book with my face mask on. So tita, but that’s really my favorite nightcap! Oh, and another one would be writing but I usually do this on weekends.
What’s the best way to spend Friday night?
Watching a ’90s or coming-of-age film in my comfy PJs. (So much for being an introvert!)
How do you relax on the weekends?
Driving around the city (I don’t go out on weekdays unless it’s for work), meeting friends, and going out of town (if my schedule permits).
The Bellas would love to know how you plan your awesome looks. Can you share your fashion/beauty secrets?
I’m pretty low maintenance with how I put myself together. For fashion, I stick to certain color schemes: blue, white, gray, black, and burgundy. Also, stripes and sometimes floral because I love Bohemian patterns. For beauty, I have sensitive skin so I only put on my eyebrows, eyelids (eyeliner is life!), and lips (I’m pretty picky with my lip colors; I mix them like paint).
Abbey’s 5 Planning Tips & Tricks
1: Plan ahead but be flexible. Learn how to adapt when something changes in your schedule because change is inevitable.
2: Keep a handy notebook. Analog over digital, always!
3: Follow the schedule. Don’t just make plans, do them.
4: Prioritize! Always a no-brainer. Know which one to tackle first, then work your way towards everything else.
5: Find a system that works for you. Planners work for me, so does Google Calendar and some sticky notes. Figure out which system works for your lifestyle—whether it’s your Calendar app or Alarm on your phone, or maybe a monthly planner instead of a weekly one. Having the right system makes planning and making them happen more efficient.
