I’ve always been wary of taking any kind of glutathione supplement. When it comes to beauty pills, it’s always better to think before you pop. Do your research. Check out the ingredients. Read the fine print.
So rather than me suggesting that you take one, I thought I’d do a quick Q&A with dermatologist, Dr. Mary Ann Manzano-Maninang of Skin Envy Facial and Laser Center. This way, you get the info you need and can make an informed decision about whether you’d like to make this a part of your beauty routine. Check out Dr. Manzano-Maninang’s answers below.
The Supplement: Thiocell
What It Is: Grape-flavored, chewable lozenges (about the size of a 25-centavo coin) that contain glutathione, vitamins C, D, and E, grape seed extract, and selenium
Price: P2,400 for 30 tablets
Q: What is glutathione?
A: Glutathione is the major antioxidant of our body. It’s the only antioxidant that resides within our cells. It’s called a “super” antioxidant, because its molecules roam through your body, seeking out and neutralizing overactive and dangerous free radicals and fights the negative impacts of stress hormone.
Q: What are the benefits of taking a glutathione supplement?
A: It slows down the aging process, improves mental function, and increases our energy. [As a result,] it [helps] boosts our immune system. [It can also] speed up the recovery of certain diseases because it [aids in] our body’s repairing process. It also helps lighten our skin due to its ability to competitively block or reduce melanin production, which is responsible for skin pigmentation.
Q: Can Thiocell be used as a multi–vitamin?
Q: What makes Thiocell better than other glutathione supplements?
A: For me, Thiocell is very unique creation [compared to other glutathione capsules in the market]. First, it comes in a lozenge form [to ensure] better absorption of the glutathione. Second, it’s recommended to be chewed once a day versus having to take a capsule three to four times a day. Third, it’s the only glutathione supplement that comes with vitamins C, E, D, selenomethionine, and grape seed extract. This is a combination that increases and maintains glutathione levels in your body.
Q: Why is it chewable?
A: Our buccal mucosa (the inside of our mouth) contains extensive blood supply (veins, arteries). Upon chewing the active ingredients in the Thiocell lozenges can be absorbed directly by these veins. It’s a faster way of absorbing glutathione, ensuring its peak concentration for a better and faster result.
Q. What if I just want to swallow it with water? Will it make the supplement less effective?
A: Yes, research proves that glutathione taken orally is not well absorbed across the gastrointestinal tract.
Q: Any side effects that we should worry about?
Q: How long does it take before you see any skin benefits?
A: In the clinical studies conducted, significant outcomes were achieved in as early as two weeks. It’s recommended to be taken for a minimum of four to six months to see [better] results. Based on my observations of family members and most of my patients who are using Thiocell, I noticed that within the first 14 days, there is a glowing, smoothening effect on their face and body. Upon continued use, there is a visible lightening effect on them within a month’s time.
Q: Should I consult with my doctor before adding Thiocell to my diet?
A: Even though Thiocell has no known negative effects and can be consumed without a prescription, there is no harm in consulting with your doctor before taking a supplement.
