Jessica Lopez, also known as Lady Fishbone, has won prestigious awards for her art pieces made with plywood and milkfish bones. This innovative Filipina will be inspiring us with her story of perseverance at the Freedom to Dream Summit 2019.

She likens her award-winning piece, “Motion of Life,” to a dance. “Kahit gaano katinik, tuloy pa rin ang pagsayaw (No matter how difficult life is, we must endure and persevere),” Jessica shares in an interview with a local newspaper.

Her inspiration came from an art workshop she attended in 2014. One of her teachers pointed out that the tilapia they were eating concealed a fish-shaped bone. “I stared at the fish bone for a long time when the teacher showed it to me,” Jessica recounts in an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “I thought, ‘Why not use fish bone for an artwork?’”

To Jessica, fish symbolize blessings, and their bones represent emptiness. “Whether we experience abundance or emptiness, it’s all a blessing because there is a time for everything.”

Jessica’s life and example proves that anything is possible if you believe in yourself and see the possibilities of what’s before you.
